This is a simple tutorial where you can learn to use the grunge effect on your text in Illustrator.
Step 01
Create a new document. Enter a few texts and then click on it and convert the outline.

Step 02
Select a texture you would like to use for your text. I chose an ocean wave. Import the image file and place it on your work space.

Hit on the Live Trace button to convert the Raster image into vector object. you can click the small arrow and make changes to the option.
Step 03
Convert the tracing object into paths or vectorize it in order to freely use it. To convert them, click on the expand button.

Step 04
Bring the text over the expanded image. Align it where you want the grunge to appear on the text. Lower the opacity of the text to see how the grunge is affecting the text. Resize bigger bits of paths so that the text remains readable. It is also a good idea to ungroup the text object at this point.

Step 05
Ungroup the texture by right clicking and then ungroup. Keep the darker bits on the work board and delete the rest of white shapes. Choose any of the white area, and go to select >same > fill colour. Hit Delete

Step 06
Check the placing of the text over the texture and delete the unnecessary area of texture
Step 07
Arrange the contents by sending the text back.
Step 08
Open the pathfinder viewer and choose all and hit the trim button

Step 09
Clean the work a bit. Right click and ungroup all.
Step 10
Delete all the textured stuffs by choosing select >same > fill colour.

This is what we get. You might get a little stroke all around the text which you can cancel by using tools and keeping the fills. Then open it in Photoshop and make changes to it. See the image below to see what I did to the text.
